Requirements vary by jurisdiction and project. Check present planning and building requirements with the authority responsible for your property rather than relying on an older article.
Bring better questions to the first conversation
Ask which site conditions are known, which require an inspection, and what the contractor's scope excludes. Establish whether design, permits, utility work, and contingency appear in the budget. Ask a lender to confirm financing eligibility rather than assuming future rent will qualify.
The financial question is what the ADU changes compared with keeping the property as it is. Read our construction-cost range guide before comparing proposals, and Grant Olsen's founder story for the experience that led him to build ADUroi.
